If your heart or lungs aren’t working properly, you may need advanced life support. The USC Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS) Program offers a technology known as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, or ECMO, to care for people who are critically ill.
ECMO takes over the work of the heart and lungs to add oxygen to the blood and pump it throughout the body. In addition to ECMO, our expert cardiac physicians also implant and manage a variety of temporary life-support devices.
