Expert Care for Hip Impingement Pain to Get You Moving Again
Hip impingement, also called femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), happens when the hip’s ball-and-socket joint doesn’t fit together as it should, creating friction. This condition causes hip pain and limits your movement — it can stop you from being as active as you’d like.
Our orthopedic specialists provide complete care to relieve hip pain and restore the range of motion in your hips. Our doctors specialize in joint problems, offering a wide range of the latest hip impingement treatments to get you moving again — without pain.
Hip Impingement Causes
Hip impingement occurs when the hip bones don’t form as they should during childhood and teenage growth.
The main causes of hip impingement are:
- Cam impingement – A bump forms on the ball of the hip joint, which wears away cartilage in the joint socket.
- Femoral retrotorsion – Abnormal twisting of the thigh bone
- Pincer impingement – Extra bone grows out over the edge of the hip joint socket
In some instances, both pincer and cam impingement in the hip joint can cause hip impingement.
Hip Impingement Symptoms
You may not notice symptoms of hip impingement until your hip joint cartilage becomes significantly damaged.
Symptoms include:
- Clicking or popping sensation during hip movement
- Limping
- Pain in your upper leg or the outside of your hip during or after running, jumping or sitting for an extended period
- Stiffness and difficulty flexing your hip more than 90 degrees
Without treatment, hip impingement can cause tears in the labrum, a ring of cartilage around the hip joint socket. It may also lead to hip osteoarthritis, a breakdown of hip joint cartilage.
